The four semester “Ecology and Evolution" Master's Study Programme is offered by the Faculty of Biological Sciences. The start of studies for the Master's Study Programme is in the Winter or Summer Semester, respectively. The application deadline for the Winter Semester is the 15th of July and for the Summer Semester, the 15 th of January.
In this Master’s programme students acquire advanced knowledge and research practice in biodiversity, ecology, evolution, systematics, nature conservation biology, and forensic biology. Moreover, students have access to a broad spectrum of modules across faculties for further scientific specialisation and qualification as well as professional practice.
Internships Science Communication You can conduct your internship at any organisation that has a science communication component, or which focuses on the interaction between science and society. We are interested in understanding the process of evolution, including the underlying ecological and genetic mechanisms. We focus on host-microbe interactions and study host-microbiota co-adaptation, bacterial adaptation to antibiotics, and the evolution of host immunity. Our teaching encompass courses for Bachelor and Master students in the fields of ecology, evolution, immunology, and genomics. During the two-year Master's programme Ecology and Evolution you will gain insight into the living organism in relation to its environment. Ecology and evolution are strongly interdependent: without ecology, we cannot really understand natural selection; and without evolution, we cannot really understand the properties of organisms and their interaction with the environment.
The experimentally oriented study is consecutive, research-oriented and leads to the second vocational qualification. A Master’s degree in Ecology, Evolution and Conservation qualifies you for independent activities in academic research, or a position in (inter-)national authorities and administrative bodies as well as in companies and organisations in applied ecology, e.g. planning offices, environmental associations, or freelance projects. The diversity of organisms is the central theme in ‘Ecology and Evolution’. The study of species and populations of plants, animals, fungi, microbes and ecosystems aids to understand the environment and evolutionary development of single components and their interactions with one another.
